Artifex Lab: The creative process behind our custom design objects

Design without limits. Materials without boundaries.

Every design object that leaves our studio is the result of a balance between technology and careful craftsmanship. We do not produce objects in series; we give shape to your ideas using noble materials such as solid wood, epoxy resin, stone, and steel.

02
Defining the concept with complete transparency

From vision to sketch

Every project begins with a conversation. Whether you already have a clear vision or need guidance, we define the technical and aesthetic solutions together. We offer complete transparency, from the final sketch based on your preferences to images of the finished design object before delivery.

03
Respect for raw materials and rigor in preparation

Carefully chosen materials

We manually select the most expressive sections of wood or natural stone, bringing forward the unique texture shaped by the passage of time. Preparation is meticulous: we cut, rough-shape, and seal the pores with multiple layers of resin, preparing the surface for a seamless fusion.

04
Technical innovation for impeccable results

Technical precision and controlled casting

We use vacuum chambers to ensure perfectly clear resin, free of air bubbles. Depending on the complexity, the casting and full curing process can take up to 20 days. Our equipment, including a gantry crane for large-scale projects and a high-power flattening stand, allows us to take on ambitious projects at impressive scale with millimetric precision.

05
Hand sanding and polishing

Refinement through hand finishing

The secret of an impeccable finish lies in patience. The surface is refined through successive wet sanding, using specialized abrasives ranging from 400 to 6,000 grit. We complete the process with a three-stage polishing treatment, achieving the clarity and depth that define Artifex Lab works.

06
Guaranteed integrity all the way to delivery

Dedicated packaging and safe delivery

Because our works are valuable and often large in scale, we build custom wooden and plywood crates padded with high-density polystyrene. Every design object reaches you in perfect condition.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions and Care

1. How resistant is epoxy resin to scratches and daily wear?

We use a premium resin with high hardness and UV protection, specially developed for furniture. Although it is a highly durable material, it is not indestructible. It behaves similarly to high-quality automotive lacquer: over time, micro-scratches may appear, but the great advantage is that the surface can be re-polished at any time, restoring its original clarity without affecting the structure of the table.

Each piece of wood is carefully selected and must have a controlled moisture level before processing. By being integrated into the resin and sealed at the pores, the wood is effectively encapsulated, which drastically reduces the natural movement caused by humidity. However, we recommend avoiding direct exposure to extreme heat sources, such as radiators, or to constant direct sunlight.

Maintenance is simple: a soft microfiber cloth and a little water are enough. Avoid harsh chemicals, concentrated alcohol, and abrasive sponges. For dining tables, we recommend using coasters and placemats to prevent thermal shock and accidental scratches.

Absolutely. Because these are bespoke, made-to-order projects, we can adjust the transparency and pigment of the resin to suit your color palette. We can also choose the wood species together – from noble walnut with stone inlays to robust oak or burl poplar, depending on the availability of our raw material stock.

Quality takes time. Between raw materials selection, successive casting stages, curing time, and the meticulous process of hand sanding, the making of a design object takes, on average, between 4 and 6 weeks. We will keep you updated with photographs from the studio at key moments throughout the process.
